The Santa Lucia Story
The Lucia Festival originated in Sweden where, according to legend, Lucia was a medieval saint who carried food and drink to the hungry in the province of Varmland during a period of famine. Lucia stands today as a symbol of light and hope to all humankind.

62th Lucia Festival
Abbie Parker was named the 2016 Lucia at the 62nd Lucia Festival Sunday at Augustana Lutheran Church. Her attendants were Nicole McGlothen, Abby Whitsel, Lexi Baier and Emily Hall. Abbie wore the traditional wreath of lighted candles on her head as she and her attendants served cookies following the smorgasbord meal.
Star Boys wearing hats covered with stars and carrying a star wand accompanied Lucia and her attendants. The Star Boys were Alex Hexom, Hunter Liberto and Tyler Welp. .
Shelley Hexom accompanied by Shannon Peterson sang the Lucia Song. Emily Hall read the Lucia Story. Jeanne Emmons served as mistress of ceremonies and led the carol singing to conclude the festival.

It was a great way to celebrate our Swedish heritage at Augustana Lutheran Church with the Lucia Festival on December 11th. The turnout was more than anyone could have imagine and it was wonderful.
It was 141 years ago that Swedish settlers established Augustana. We are not sure how they celebrated the first 80 years, but for 62 years we have had the Lucia Festival.
